At tonight’s WWE Money in the Bank pay-per-view, CM Punk won the WWE Championship from John Cena. As per the storyline, CM Punk will now leave the WWE with the WWE Championship because his contract expires tonight. However, given the circumstances during his match with Cena tonight, it is quite obvious that Punk has re-signed with the company. Whether that is a short-term or a long-term contract remains to be seen, however.
According to a WWE source I spoke to last night, as of last night, WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon was still “undecided” about what direction he was going to go with the main event tonight. A source told me that he was looking at an outcome that would generate the most buzz because of the poor RAW ratings as of late on the USA Network. A source told me that McMahon was under pressure to deliver because of the feeling that the world was watching the pay-per-view because of the stunning way the Punk and Cena storyline has turned out in recent weeks with Punk’s real-life contract dispute with WWE transferring over to a storyline on television.
In recent interviews in the past few days, Punk has stated very candidly that he has not re-signed with the company. He did so in an interview conducted for the Abe Konan Sirius/XM Radio Show. He said that the company wanted to re-sign him for 5 years; Punk said he did not want to. Punk stated that as of a few years back, Punk was not getting along well with Orton; it apparently became physical between the two. In addition, Punk feels that the Rock should not main event WrestleMania 28 in Miami.
